This must be the place
Hannelore van Balkom and Bas van den Hout share a deep interest in the human body and the way it interacts with its surroundings. They draw inspiration from surfaces and crawl under the skin to see what’s hidden underneath. They question the effects our surroundings have on us as human beings, like the place we are living in, but also the place where we grew up or the spaces hiding in our subconscious? They see the city as a metaphor for our bodies. The center, as the public face of the city, is often well maintained, but a step deeper and into the side roads you often see the less polished parts.
They draw this comparison to the human being, where people often show the best version of themselves on the surface, in contrast to the less presentable side that they prefer to keep hidden. Both artists feel the urge to slow down time and let an object or surface guide them in what is needed. On a daily basis, they wander through the city, where they collect objects and images that directly or indirectly find their way into their work. For years they have been closely connected and on the sidelines of each other's development, but it’s the first time they directly interact with each other through a duo show. Finally the time has been right to come together so ‘This must be the place’.
